Karl von Drais de Sauerbrun

Karl von Drais de Sauerbrun (Karlesruh in Baden) created a two-wheeled horseless transport machine called a “draisienne” in 1816. This invention was the precursor to the bicycle.

Initially, the draisienne was meant to replace the horse that had been starved to death after the eruption of Mount Tambora. It was not popular and it was impractical. It was also very expensive. Drais needed to show people his invention in a more dramatic way to get them interested.

The wooden beam frame that the draisienne used had two identical-sized wheels and a wooden beam frame. A rider would sit on it like a bicycle and use his feet to propel it forward.

Pierre and Ernest Michaux

In 1866, Pierre Lallement became the first person to receive a US patent for the invention of the bicycle. He was born in Pont-a-Mousson, France, and moved to Paris when he was a young man. Later, he settled down in Ansonia (Connecticut).

During his time in the United States, Lallement developed and patented the bicycle. His design was the first true bicycle in the world. It had a rotary crank transmission. There were also pedals attached to the front wheel.

The bicycle had a wooden frame and an iron wheel. This was a clunky, unsafe vehicle that had to be ridden with the legs. A brake was added to the bike in 1850, making it safer to ride.
